Introduction
The stables at The Mill, Guernsey required a durable flooring solution that would efficiently compensate for changes in level and provide a comfortable but hardwearing surface for the resident horses.
The challenge
Horses require a durable surface that is also cushioned to protect their joints, tendons and shoes. As part of a stable renovation project, a wall was removed between the existing stables, resulting in floor level changes.
A stable floor solution was required that could create a single directional fall, facilitating drainage. The new floor level needed to remove a dangerous step from the area which could cause injury to the horses and owners, as well as providing a safer surface.
The solution
Triflex EquiTerra is a hard wearing, cold applied flooring system ideal for use in a range of equine applications including stables and walkways.
The system is based on advanced polymer chemistry to provide a cushioned and seamless non-slip flooring. A PMMA based primer seals the existing cleaned floor and is cast with quartz. The resulting, rapidly curing surface acts as a key to the cushioned base layer. The specially formulated Triflex EquiTerra Binder base layer consists of a solvent free resin that is mixed with 1-4mm rubber crumb granules in a forced rotary mixer, to provide a wet pour material. Easily worked, the stable floor base layer thickness here varied from 20mm to 90mm, creating the required single directional fall. As the system can accommodate uneven surfaces, no extra ground levelling works was required reducing the costs and time compared to conventional preformed solutions.
Once cured, the Triflex EquiTerra pore sealer was then applied to fill surface pores, followed by the black Finish providing a sealed and aesthetic surface. The Triflex EquiTerra system is fully bonded to the stable floor, an important consideration for horse safety. Unlike conventional preformed mats and pavers, the flooring will not move, shift or crumble over time, maintaining its original form and preventing trip hazard. The system was used for both the stalls and stable walkway delivering a seamless route throughout the stable block.
The durability and comfort of the equine flooring system means that The Mill owners believe they will use less hay in the stables too, negating the need for a considerable hay depth usually required for equine wellbeing.
The stables at The Mill in Guernsey now provides the resident horses with a comfortable, safe and effective seamless flooring solution that is highly durable. The system was expertly installed by Triflex authorised contractor DH liquid coatings.
