Substrate preparation and pre-treatment

Prior to substrate preparation and the commencement of work to install a roof, walkway, balcony or terrace system, the Contractor must check and only proceed if he is satisfied the following substrate requirements in accordance with Triflex prescribed test methods. Consult Triflex Technical car park substrate preparation and pre-treatment requirements or for further details.

Where there are any issues with the adhesion to, or cohesive strength of the substrate, consult Triflex Technical.

Preparation and pre-treatment

On-site peel strength adhesion tests to be based on:

  • Remove finishes back to a sound cementitious type coating or aggregate finish and test adhesion with Triflex Cryl Primer 276

If unsuccessful:

  • Remove finishes back to a sound cementitious type coating or aggregate finish and test adhesion with Triflex Pox R 100 with Quartz

On-site peel strength adhesion tests to be based on:

  • Clean
  • Clean and application of Triflex Cryl Primer 222

Preparation and pre-treatment

Triflex adheres to almost all single-ply membranes, however the difficulties in identifying the variables in products and their formulation requires that preparation / pre-treatment / priming be determined in each case by on site adhesion tests.

On-site peel strength adhesion tests to be based on:

  • Clean
  • Clean with Triflex Cleaner
  • Clean with Triflex Cleaner and lightly abrading
  • Clean and application of Triflex Primer 610
  • Clean light abrasion and application of Triflex Primer 610

Preparation and pre-treatment

Triflex adheres to the majority of existing membranes/ coatings, however the difficulties in identifying the product, variables in products and formulation requires that preparation / pre-treatment / priming be determined in each case by on site adhesion tests. Adhesion tests must be carried out to determine the adhesion of the existing membrane / coating to the substrate and of the Triflex system to the membrane / coating.

On-site peel strength adhesion tests to be based on:

  • Clean
  • Clean with Triflex Cleaner
  • Clean with Triflex Cleaner and lightly abrading

Particular care should be taken with failed solvent-based coatings including single component polyurethane and single component fibre reinforced acrylics as the solvent may not have fully evaporated and the membrane / coating may be uncured beneath the surface.

Where coatings are crazed or cracked the failure is indicative of loss of binder and in these cases the membrane / coating should be removed.

Preparation and pre-treatment

Adhesion tests must be carried out to determine the adhesion of the existing solar reflective coating to the roof build-up and of the Triflex system to the solar reflective coating.

On-site peel strength adhesion tests to be based on:

  • Clean and application of Triflex Cryl Primer 222 with maximum Triflex Catalyst
  • Clean and application of Triflex Spray FastPrime and Triflex SA Carrier Membrane
