The challenge

Tween Bridge wind farm consists of 22 turbines that, per annum, generate up to 44MW of power, providing 300,000 homes with their annual electricity needs.

The towers and concrete foundations are constantly exposed to the force of strong winds; this constant movement stresses the structure and can encourage cracks in the tower and foundations, which then become vulnerable to moisture penetration and frost damage.

The solution

Tween Bridge

Triflex Towersafe was specified to provide waterproof overbanding to each vulnerable construction joint of the concrete foundation base. The totally waterproof, permanently elastic, fleece reinforced system prevents water ingress to the concrete, protects against freeze-thaw and is resistant to flexural fatigue. The system is resiliant and provides lasting protection to wind turbines; according to its BBA certificate, ‘under normal service conditions the system will have a service life in excess of 25 years’.

Triflex Towersafe utilises totally cold applied PMMA resin technology; it cures at an exceptionally rapid rate, even at low temperatures (down to -5°C); allowing weather windows to be maximised and downtimes to be reduced.

The application of Triflex Towersafe to the foundations of Tween Bridge wind farm’s turbines has protected the underlying concrete, significantly reducing the future ‘life cycle’ maintenance costs
