The challenge

Located in a prominent position on Torquay sea front, the duck pond in Abbey gardens had issues with leaking for more than 5 years. It was clear that the duck pond required a complete refurbishment to eliminate this problem, but it was also vitally important to minimise disruption to the wildlife, local residents and tourists.

An overlay waterproofing solution allowing the original pond construction to be maintained was the ideal option. Due to its proven track record in both submerged applications and overlaying existing substrates, a decision was taken to use the Triflex ProTect system.

The single layer, cold liquid applied waterproofing system incorporated localised, heavy duty surfacing to loosely laid stone pedestals and lighting plinths. The use of the Triflex Pox R103 primer also ensured that the existing concrete substrate was prepared suitably for the application.

The refurbishment of the pond successfully eliminated the issue of leaking water, and with the need for minimal preparation alongside the use of the fast curing, cold liquid applied membrane, the work was completed two weeks ahead of schedule.
