The challenge

The single 3,000m² car park at the popular Asda store in Huyton, Liverpool was showing significant signs of deterioration and was in need of urgent renovation. The existing asphalt substrate was installed a number of years earlier and had been subject to high levels of trafficking and exposure to the elements. This had caused numerous defects including cracks, blisters, wheel indentations and ruckling. This was not only allowing water to penetrate the structure in some cases but was also posing a serious health and safety risk to car park users.

As well as the risk of trips and falls on the uneven surface, in the winter months indentations and cracks would fill with water and freeze, making it extremely slippery for both cars and pedestrians. The asphalt had also lost its crimp in high wear areas, resulting in a smooth surface with poor anti-slip properties in wet conditions.

Initially the scope of works was to provide a durable waterproofing and surfacing solution to the parking bays and ramps which were showing the most serious signs of wear. However, following a detailed, free of charge survey by Triflex, it was determined that the entire car park was in need of refurbishment to ensure that the entire structure was protected and that an aesthetically pleasing finish was achieved.

The solution

Given its successful track record in the overlay of bituminous coverings such as asphalt, the EN1504-2 Triflex DeckFloor system was identified as the best solution. With the ability to waterproof and surface both asphalt and concrete substrates, the heavy duty system incorporates a BBA and ETA certified reinforced waterproofing membrane for high risks areas and details, in combination with an exceptionally durable, waterproof wearing layer.

It was essential that disruption was kept to a minimum during the works as the store and car park had to remain operational. This was not an issue as Triflex DeckFloor is exceptionally fast curing which meant that the car park could be quickly re-opened to traffic, and the works were also completed in phases so that the customers had available parking at all times.

Poor weather conditions and heavy rainfall during the works also posed no problems as the rapid cure times even at low temperatures allowed weather window to be maximised.
